Cultural events dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Aram Khachaturian held under auspices of the Permanent Mission

On 20 September, 2023, a panel discussion dedicated to the 120^th birthday of the great musician and composer Aram Khachaturian was held at Pera Museum in Istanbul, followed by an official reception of the Permanent Mission of Armenia to BSEC, during which pianist Şahan Arzruni performed Khachaturian's piano works. A joint concert by Khachaturian Trio from Yerevan and Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra scheduled to be held at Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall in Istanbul on 21 September, has been postponed due to the situation caused by the renewed aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh. The event was attended by Consuls General of a number of countries accredited in Istanbul, other representatives of the local consular corps, BSEC PERMIS Secretary General, other officials of BSEC Secretariat, representatives of Istanbul municipalities, Armenian community members, musicians and large number of other guests.

While noting that music and art are recognized as important tools for building bridges among peoples and strengthening cultural ties, in his welcoming remarks, Mr. Sahak Sargsyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to BSEC, emphasized that with that understanding and by honoring Khachaturian’s legacy, the Permanent Mission decided to organize these two events, which coincide with the 32^nd anniversary of the restoration of Armenia’s independence. He stressed that despite the unprecedented challenges Armenia has been encountering throughout its history, thanks to its strength and resilience anchored in strong identity, culture and traditions, the Armenian people revived, started a new life and regained the independence. Mr. Sargsyan continued that his nation is currently facing another challenge, expressing confidence that it will be overcome as well.

He further mentioned that as the current Country-Coordinator of BSEC Working Group on Culture, Armenia recognizes the need to enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and peaceful coexistence in the region. Remarks were also delivered by Secretary General of BSEC Organization, Director of Pera Museum and Head of Istanbul Philharmonic Society, as well as recognition plaques were presented by the Permanent Mission.
