On March 4, 2022, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure (MTAI) of the Republic of Armenia and BSEC Permanent International Secretariat (BSEC PERMIS) co-organized a webinar entitled “Green Energy in the BSEC Region and Beyond”.

Held in the context of 30th anniversary of BSEC, the online event brought together government officials from BSEC Member States, Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Mr. Hakob Vardanyan, BSEC PERMIS Secretary General Amb. Lazar Comanescu, Coordinator of the BSEC Green Energy Network Prof. Dimitrios Mavrakis, representatives of BSEC Related Bodies, and other international organizations, national associations, research and educational institutions, and private sector to stimulate discussion on how renewable energy and low-carbon alternatives can help nations achieve sustainable economic development and materialize the long-term vision of transforming the greater Black Sea Region into a model for clean energy - based on BSEC Green Energy Strategy.

Welcoming the participants Deputy Minister Vardanyan stressed the importance of the renewable energy sector for his country, emphasizing that Armenia, as the current Country-coordinator of the BSEC Working Group on Energy, is making efforts to further promote regional cooperation in the field. Secretary General Comanescu in his turn mentioned that the energy sector, which has encountered serious impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of the key areas of cooperation among the BSEC Member States stressing that elaboration and implementation of new projects in the energy sector especially in Green Energy is of utmost importance especially in current extraordinary conditions.

During two sessions of the webinar moderated by the BSEC PERMIS Executive Manager, Amb. Ashot Kocharian, panelists presented their experience and successful joint projects, exchanged best practices in the field and discussed the national and international trends in the energy transition and clean energy sector. Views were expressed on the untapped potential of the successful joint projects to be replicated across the BSEC Region and beyond, and more regional synergies to be generated for the benefit of societies and sustainable economic development of countries. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy sector and the prospects for the sector development in the post-pandemic period were also discussed.

In closing Mr. Sahak Sargsyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to BSEC, stressed that this regional stakeholders webinar sets the basis for continuing similar events in the future.
